Over the years, South African homes and businesses have been lit up and connected with the leading South African manufacturer and distributor of local electrical and electronics solutions company, Ellies. To pay homage to South Africa, Ellies’ CSI division, Ellies Engage have made it their mission to serve the communities in which they operate.

Towards the end of February 2019, Ellies Engage initiated the first part of their Rise Against Hunger initiative at their headquarters in Joburg and across their branches nationwide, where employees came out in their numbers to pack nutritious food parcels. This was in preparation of their handover which took place on Wednesday, 6 March 2019 at Ipeleng Day Care and Letukapele Kiddies Nest homes in Soweto.

The food parcel handover met with smiles and happy faces from kids who, unfortunately know the pain of sleeping on an empty stomach. According to Poverty Trends Report for 2006 to 2015, more than 50% of the South African population is living in poverty and the number has been on incline since 2011 giving both government and corporates the responsibility to help where needs be – after all, they (children) are our future leaders we are protecting and feeding.

According to Shaun Prithivirajh, Ellies CEO, Ellies is no stranger to giving back, mentioning that it’s all about giving as good as they get, by channelling the company’s success back into the communities that have helped make the business what it is today. Under the banner ‘Engage’, Ellies has been positioned to create sentiment amongst consumers and communities.

“Ellies has been a good corporate citizen for over the years and through Ellies Engage we saw a vehicle in which we can engage with communities we operate in. It has become a culture in our business to lend a helping hand to those in need”, said Prithivirajh. “We are proud to be part of this initiative because it is entrenched in the values of our business and that we can contribute to making sure that South African communities and children meet their basic needs requirements” he added.

The responsibility of lending a helping hand does not only lie with corporates or government but also organisations that are aimed at making a difference. Rise Against Hunger CEO, Brian emphasised that the responsibility that they have bestowed upon themselves is greater than nutritious food parcels, but also have a great impact in making sure that they change the lives of children across South Africa – with the assistance from corporates at large.

“If you want to give back, get involved, whether it’s in your communities or with Rise Against Hunger. You will always find a space on the second Saturday of each month, we open up our warehouse to the public to join us as we host our meal packing events at no charge – this could be the perfect way to help put food on the tables of underprivileged children”, concluded Brian.
